Does the sun prostrate under the Throne and set in a muddy spring?

The short answer

An authentic hadith says the sun goes and prostrates beneath the Throne and asks permission to rise, until one day it will be told to rise from the west. Scholars such as Ibn Kathir explain that the Throne is above all of creation, so the sun is always beneath it, and its prostration is a real submission whose manner we do not perceive. The Quran's verse about Dhul-Qarnayn says he "found it" setting in a dark spring, describing how it appeared to him.

Explanation

At sunset the Prophet ﷺ asked Abu Dharr, "Do you know where the sun goes?" He said it goes until it prostrates beneath the Throne and asks permission to rise, and is permitted, until a time comes when its prostration is not accepted and it is told to return the way it came, so it rises in the west. He linked this to the verse "And the sun runs [on course] toward its stopping point" 1. In Muslim's narration the sun reaches "its resting place under the Throne", falls prostrate and remains so until told to rise, and this repeats while "the people do not discern anything" unusual in it, until the day it is told to rise from its place of setting 2.

Some take "goes" and "remains" to mean the sun leaves the sky or halts each night; classical scholars such as Ibn Kathir did not read it so. He explains that the Throne is the roof of all creation, so "wherever it goes, it is beneath the Throne", and he places the prostration at the point in its daily course opposite its noon position 3. The narration itself says people notice nothing unusual in its course 2.

The Quran also says the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the trees and the animals prostrate to Allah 4, and that everything glorifies Him, "but you do not understand their [way of] exalting" 5. So the sun's prostration is real, but of a kind we do not see.

The second question is about Dhul-Qarnayn. When he reached the setting place of the sun, "he found it [as if] setting in a spring of dark mud" 6. The verse reports what he found, that is, what he saw. Ibn Kathir explains that he saw the sun as if it were setting in the ocean, as anyone on a coast sees it, and he rejects the storytellers' claim that Dhul-Qarnayn reached the place in the sky where the sun sets 7. The same wording is used for sunrise: he found it rising on a people 8.

The hadith's main message is its ending: once the sun rises from the west, faith will no longer benefit those who delayed it 2. The time to turn to Allah is now.

The evidence

  1. 1
    Hadith Sahih al-Bukhari 3199
    Sahih Bukhari

The sun prostrates beneath the Throne and seeks permission to rise, until it is told to rise from the west.

Narrated Abu Dhar:The Prophet (ﷺ) asked me at sunset, "Do you know where the sun goes (at the time of sunset)?" I replied, "Allah and His Apostle know better." He said, "It goes (i.e. travels) till it prostrates Itself underneath the Throne and takes the permission to rise again, and it is permitted and then (a time will come when) it will be about to prostrate itself but its prostration will not be accepted, and it will ask permission to go on its course but it will not be permitted, but it will be ordered to return whence it has come and so it will rise in the west. And that is the interpretation of the Statement of Allah: "And the sun Runs its fixed course For a term (decreed). that is The Decree of (Allah) The Exalted in Might, The All- Knowing

The sun prostrates at its resting place under the Throne; people notice nothing unusual until it rises from the west.

It is narrated on the authority of Abu Dharr that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) one day said:Do you know where the sun goes? They replied: Allah and His Apostle know best. He (the Holy Prophet) observed: Verily it (the sun) glides till it reaches its resting place under the Throne. Then it falls prostrate and remains there until it is asked: Rise up and go to the place whence you came, and it goes back and continues emerging out from its rising place and then glides till it reaches its place of rest under the Throne and falls prostrate and remains in that state until it is asked: Rise up and return to the place whence you came, and it returns and emerges out from it rising place and the it glides (in such a normal way) that the people do not discern anything ( unusual in it) till it reaches its resting place under the Throne. Then it would be said to it: Rise up and emerge out from the place of your setting, and it will rise from the place of its setting. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said. Do you know when it would happen? It would happen at the time when faith will not benefit one who has not previously believed or has derived no good from the faith

Tafsir Tafsir Ibn Kathir · 36:38

And a sign for them is the night. We withdraw therefrom the day, and behold, they are in darkness (37)And the sun runs on its fixed course for a term (appointed). That is the decree of the Almighty, the All-Knowing (38)And the moon, We have decreed for it stages, till it returns like the old dried curved date stalk (39)It is not for the sun to overtake the moon, nor does the night outstrip the day. They all float, each in an orbit (40) Among the Signs of the Might and Power of Allah are the Night and Day, and the Sun and Moon Allah tells us of further proof of His great might and power, which is His creation of the night and day, the one with its darkness and the other with its light. He has caused them to follow one another, so that one comes and the other goes, and so on, as He says: يُغْشِي اللَّيْلَ النَّهَارَ يَطْلُبُهُ حَثِيثًا (He brings the night as a cover over the day, seeking it rapidly)(7:54). (And a sign for them is the night. We withdraw therefrom the day,) meaning, 'We take it away from it, so it goes away and the night comes.' Allah says: فَإِذَا هُمْ مُظْلِمُونَ (and behold, they are in darkness.) As it says in the Hadith: إِذَا أَقْبَلَ اللَّيْلُ مِنْ هٰهُنَا، وَأَدْبَرَ النَّهَارُ مِنْ هٰهُنَا، وَغَرَبَتِ الشَّمْسُ، فَقَدْ أَفْطَرَ الصَّائِمُ (When the night comes from here, and the day departs from here, and the sun has set, then the fasting person should break his fast.) This is the apparent meaning of the Ayah. (And the sun runs on its fixed course for a term (appointed). That is the decree of the Almighty, the All-Knowing) There are two views over the meaning of the phrase لِمُسْتَقَرٍّ لَهَا (on its fixed course for a term (appointed).)(The first view) is that it refers to its fixed course of location, which is beneath the Throne, beyond the earth in that direction. Wherever it goes, it is beneath the Throne, it and all of creation, because the Throne is the roof of creation and it is not a sphere as many astronomers claim. Rather it is a dome supported by legs or pillars, carried by the angels, and it is above the universe, above the heads of people. When the sun is at its zenith at noon, it is in its closest position to Throne, and when it runs in its fourth orbit at the opposite point to its zenith, at midnight, it is in its furthest position from the Throne. At that point it prostrates and asks for permission to rise, as mentioned in the Hadiths. Al-Bukhari recorded that Abu Dharr, may Allah be pleased with him, said, "I was with the Prophet ﷺ in the Masjid at sunset, and he ﷺ said: يَا أَبَا ذَرٍّ، أَتَدْرِي أَيْنَ تَغْرُبُ الشَّمْسُ؟ (O Abu Dharr! Do you know where the sun sets?) I said, 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' He ﷺ said: فَإِنَّهَا تَذْهَبُ حَتّٰى تَسْجُدَ تَحْتَ الْعَرْشِ، فَذَلِكَ قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى:وَالشَّمْسُ تَجْرِي لِمُسْتَقَرٍّ لَهَا ۚ ذَٰلِكَ تَقْدِيرُ الْعَزِيزِ الْعَلِيمِ (It goes and prostrates beneath the Throne, and that is what Allah says: (And the sun runs on its fixed course for a term. That is the decree of the Almighty, the All-Knowing.))" It was also reported that Abu Dharr, may Allah be pleased with him, said, "I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the Ayah: وَالشَّمْسُ تَجْرِي لِمُسْتَقَرٍّ لَهَا ۚ (And the sun runs on its fixed course for a term.) He ﷺ said: مُسْتَقَرُّهَا تَحْتَ الْعَرْشِ (Its fixed course is beneath the Throne.)" (The second view) is that this refers to when the sun's appointed time comes to an end, which will be on the Day of Resurrection, when its fixed course will be abolished, it will come to a halt and it will be rolled up. This world will come to an end, and that will be the end of its appointed time. This is the fixed course of its time. Qatadah said: لِمُسْتَقَرٍّ لَّهَـا (on its fixed course for a term (appointed).) means, "It has an appointed time and it will not go beyond that." It was also said that this means, it keeps moving in its summer orbit for a certain time, and it does not exceed that, then it moves to its winter orbit for a certain time, and it does not exceed that. This was narrated from 'Abdullah bin 'Amr, may Allah be pleased with him. Ibn Mas'ud and Ibn 'Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them, recited this Ayah as: (وَالشَّمْسُ تَجْرِي لَا مُسْتَقَرَّ لَهَا) (And the sun runs with no fixed course for a term,) meaning that it has no destination and it does not settle in one place, rather it keeps moving night and day, never slowing down or stopping, as in the Ayah: وَسَخَّرَ لَكُمُ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ دَائِبَيْنِ ۖ (And He has made the sun and the moon, both constantly pursuing their courses, to be of service to you)(14:33). which means, they will never slow down or stop, until the Day of Resurrection. (That is the decree of the Almighty,) means, which none can oppose or prevent. الْعَلِيمِ (the All-Knowing.) Who knows every movement and every cessation of movement, Who has decreed that and Who has set it in motion following a pattern in which there are no differences or inversions, as Allah says: فَالِقُ الْإِصْبَاحِ وَجَعَلَ اللَّيْلَ سَكَنًا وَالشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ حُسْبَانًا ۚ ذَٰلِكَ تَقْدِيرُ الْعَزِيزِ الْعَلِيمِ ((He is the) Cleaver of the daybreak. He has appointed the night for resting, and the sun and the moon for reckoning. Such is the measuring of the Almighty, the All-Knowing.)(6:96) And this is how this Ayah ends: ذَٰلِكَ تَقْدِيرُ الْعَزِيزِ الْعَلِيمِ (That is the decree of the Almighty, the All-Knowing.) (And the moon, We have decreed for it stages,) meaning, 'We have caused it to run in a different orbit, from which passing of the months can be deduced, just as night and day are known from the sun.' This is like the Ayah: يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الْأَهِلَّةِ ۖ قُلْ هِيَ مَوَاقِيتُ لِلنَّاسِ وَالْحَجِّ ۗ (They ask you about the crescent moons. Say: "These are signs to mark fixed periods of time for mankind and for the pilgrimage (Hajj).")(2:189), (It is He Who made the sun a shining thing and the moon as a light and measured out for it stages that you might know the number of years and the reckoning)(10:5), and (And We have appointed the night and the day as two Ayat (signs). Then, We have obliterated the sign of the night while We have made the sign of the day illuminating, that you may seek bounty from your Lord, and that you may know the number of the years and the reckoning. And We have explained everything with full explanation.)(17:12) So, He has given the sun its own light, and the moon its (reflection of) light, and has given each its own orbit. So the sun rises each day and sets at the end of the day, giving one kind of light all the time, but it moves, rising and setting at different points in the summer and winter, thus making the days and nights longer or shorter alternatively according to the season. Its authority is in the daytime, for it is the heavenly body that dominates the day. As for the moon, Allah has decreed that it should pass through different phases. At the beginning of the month, the moon appears small when it rises. It gives off little light, then on the second night its light increases and it rises to a higher position, and the higher it rises the more light it gives – even though it is reflected from the sun – until it becomes full on the fourteenth night of the month. Then it starts to wane until the end of the month, until it appears like the old dried curved date stalk. Ibn 'Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, said, "This is the original stem (which connects the bunch of dates to the tree)." The Arabs have a name for each set of three nights in a month, according to the phases of the moon. They call the first three nights Ghurar; the next three nights Nufal; the next three nights Tusa' (nine) – because the last of them is the ninth. The next three nights are called 'Ushar (ten) – because the first of them is the tenth. The next three nights are called Al-Bid (white) – because of the light of the moon which shines brightly throughout these three nights. The next three nights are called Dura', the plural of Dar'a', because on the first of them the night is dark from the moon rising late. Dar'a' refers to the black sheep, i.e., the one whose head is black; the next three nights Zulam; then Hanadis, then Da'adi; then Mihaq, because of the absence of moonlight at the beginning of the month. Abu 'Ubayd did not recognize the names Tusa' and 'Ushar, in the book Gharib Al-Musannaf. (It is not for the sun to overtake the moon,) Mujahid said, "Each of them has a limit which it does not transgress or fall short of. When the time of one comes, the other goes away, and when the time for one to prevail comes, the time of the other ceases." 'Ikrimah said concerning the Ayah, (It is not for the sun to overtake the moon,) this means that each of them has its time when it prevails. So it is not appropriate for the sun to rise at night. وَلَا اللَّيْلُ سَابِقُ النَّهَارِ (nor does the night outstrip the day.) means, after night has passed, it is not right for another night to come until it has been day. The authority of the sun is during the day and the authority of the moon is at night. Ad-Dahhak said, "The night does not depart from here until the day comes from here – and he pointed to the east." Mujahid said: وَلَا اللَّيْلُ سَابِقُ النَّهَارِ (nor does the night outstrip the day.) "They seek one another rapidly." The meaning is that there is no gap between night and day; each of them follows the other with no interval, because they have been subjugated and are both constantly pursuing one another. (They all float, each in an orbit.) means, night and day, the sun and the moon, all of them are floating, i.e., revolving, in their orbits in the heaven. This was the view of Ibn 'Abbas, 'Ikrimah, Ad-Dahhak, Al-Hasan, Qatadah and 'Ata' Al-Khurasani. Ibn 'Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, and others among the Salaf said, "In an orbit like the arc of a spinning wheel."

(88) His traveling and reaching the Place where the Sun sets (the West) فَأَتْبَعَ سَبَبًا (So he followed a way.) Ibn 'Abbas said that he followed different routes to achieve what he wanted. (So he followed a way.) Mujahid said that he followed different routes, east and west. According to one report narrated from Mujahid, he said: سَبَبًا (a way) means, "A route through the land." Qatadah said, "It means he followed the routes and landmarks of the earth." (Until, when he reached the setting place of the sun,) means, he followed a route until he reached the furthest point that could be reached in the direction of the sun's setting, which is the west of the earth. As for the idea of his reaching the place in the sky where the sun sets, this is something impossible, and the tales told by storytellers that he traveled so far to the west that the sun set behind him are not true at all. Most of these stories come from the myths of the People of the Book and the fabrications and lies of their heretics. وَجَدَهَا تَغْرُبُ فِي عَيْنٍ حَمِئَةٍ (he found it setting in a spring of Hami'ah) meaning, he saw the sun as if it were setting in the ocean. This is something which everyone who goes to the coast can see: it looks as if the sun is setting into the sea but in fact it never leaves its path in which it is fixed. Hami'ah is, according to one of the two views, derived from the word Hama'ah, which means mud. This is like the Ayah: إِنِّي خَالِقٌ بَشَرًا مِّن صَلْصَالٍ مِّنْ حَمَإٍ مَّسْنُونٍ ("I am going to create a man (Adam) from dried clay of altered Hama'h (mud))[15:28], which means smooth mud, as we have discussed above. وَوَجَدَ عِندَهَا قَوْمًا (And he found near it a people.) meaning a nation. They mentioned that they were a great nation from among the sons of Adam. قُلْنَا يَا ذَا الْقَرْنَيْنِ إِمَّا أَن تُعَذِّبَ وَإِمَّا أَن تَتَّخِذَ فِيهِمْ حُسْنًا (We (Allah) said (by inspiration): "O Dhul-Qarnayn! Either you punish them or treat them with kindness") means, Allah gave him power over them and gave him the choice: if he wanted to, he could kill the men and take the women and children captive, or if he wanted to, he could set them free, with or without a ransom. His justice and faith became apparent in the ruling he pronounced: أَمَّا مَن ظَلَمَ (As for him who does wrong,) meaning who persists in his Kufr and in associating others in worship with his Lord, فَسَوْفَ نُعَذِّبُهُ (we shall punish him,) Qatadah said, i.e., by killing him. ثُمَّ يُرَدُّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِ فَيُعَذِّبُهُ عَذَابًا نُّكْرًا (and then he will be brought back unto his Lord, Who will punish him with a terrible torment.) meaning a severe, far-reaching and painful punishment. This implies a confirmation of the Hereafter and the reward and punishment. وَأَمَّا مَنْ آمَنَ (But as for him who believes), meaning 'who follows us in our call to worship Allah Alone with no partner or associate,' فَلَهُ جَزَاءً الْحُسْنَىٰ (he shall have the best reward,) meaning in the Hereafter, with Allah. وَسَنَقُولُ لَهُ مِنْ أَمْرِنَا يُسْرًا (and we (Dhul-Qarnayn) shall speak unto him mild words.) Mujahid said, '(words of) kindness.'
