Step 1

Is there a Creator?

The Quran begins its argument with the world around you, and invites you to think.

• Is there any proof that Allah exists? Yes. The Quran does not ask for blind faith; it asks you to think. Its central argument is simple: you were not created from nothing and you did not create yourself, so you have a Creator. It adds the signs in the universe and within yourself, and the inborn sense (fitrah) that every human being has of their Lord. ۞ 8
• If everything has a creator, who created Allah? Nobody. The rule is that everything that *begins to exist* needs a creator, and Allah never began to exist: He is "the First", with nothing before Him. The Prophet ﷺ foretold that people would ask this question and taught that when the thought comes, you seek refuge in Allah, stop following it, and say "I believe in Allah". ۞ 8
• Why did Allah create us? Allah says He created jinn and humans to worship Him, and that life and death are a test of who is best in deeds. He does not need our worship; it benefits us, and our choices are recorded so that we are rewarded for them. ۞ 7

Step 2

Why should I trust the Quran?

A book that invites scrutiny, and makes claims about the world and about history that can be checked.

• Does the Quran contradict science? No. Muslims believe the same Allah who created the universe revealed the Quran, so established facts about His creation and His words cannot truly clash. Apparent conflicts usually come from misreading a verse or treating an unproven theory as certain. ۞ 8
• Does Islam require blind faith and forbid asking questions? No, the Quran repeatedly demands proof, criticises people who follow their ancestors without thinking, and invites readers to reflect on the Quran itself and test it. The Prophet ﷺ reassured Companions troubled by doubts and defended Ibrahim's (AS) wish to see with his own eyes. What Islam discourages is not honest inquiry but pointless or hostile questioning and speaking without knowledge. ۞ 8

• The heaven that is being widened
• Darkness upon darkness in the deep sea

• The Romans have been defeated, and they will overcome

Step 3

What about the hard questions?

Women, violence, freedom of belief. The difficult texts themselves, in context, with what scholars have said.

• Does Islam oppress women? No. The Quran and Sunnah give women the same human worth, the same accountability before Allah and the same reward as men, along with rights to property, earnings and consent in marriage. Islamic law does not make men and women identical in every role, and it is honest to say so, but difference in role is not the same as lesser worth. ۞ 8
• Did Islam spread by the sword? The early Muslim state did expand through wars and conquest, and it would be wrong to deny that. But conquest and conversion are different things. The sources forbid forcing anyone into Islam, the conquered Jews and Christians were allowed to keep their religion, and the sources present invitation, teaching and personal example as the way to spread Islam. The hardest exception, the idol-worshippers of Arabia, is explained below. ۞ 8
• Does Islam really say there is no compulsion in religion (2:256)? Yes. "There shall be no compulsion in [acceptance of] the religion" is a clear verse of the Quran, and classical commentators explained it as "do not force anyone to become Muslim". Many other verses say the Prophet's duty was only to convey the message, and that faith forced on someone is not faith at all. ۞ 8

Step 4

What does Islam ask of me?

Belief in one God, prayer, charity, fasting and good character, and the mercy that surrounds it all.

• Why do Muslims pray five times a day? Because Allah made five daily prayers obligatory. They were given to the Prophet ﷺ on the night of the Mi'raj, first as fifty and then reduced to five that carry the reward of fifty. The Quran commands prayer at fixed times, and the Prophet ﷺ taught those five times exactly, as Jibril taught him. ۞ 8
• What is the reward of good character in Islam? Enormous. The Prophet ﷺ said nothing is heavier on the believer's scale on the Day of Judgment than good character, that it can reach the rank of someone who fasts by day and prays by night, and that those with the best character will be nearest to him on the Day of Judgment. ۞ 8
• I've sinned so much. Can Allah still forgive me? Yes. Allah says, "do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins", and He calls this out to those who have "transgressed against themselves". Sincere repentance is accepted for any sin, however large or repeated, as long as you turn back to Him before death. ۞ 8

Step 5

What happens after death?

The grave, the Day of Judgment, and what the Quran says about justice for every soul.

• What happens to the soul when we die? At death, the angel of death and his helpers take the soul. For the believer, angels come with peace and good news of Allah's pleasure, so he loves to meet Allah; for the one who rejected Allah, the soul is taken harshly. Death is not the end but a move to the next stage. ۞ 8
• What will happen on the Day of Judgment? The Horn will be blown and all in the heavens and earth will fall dead, except whom Allah wills; at a second blast all people will rise. They will be gathered before Allah, their records will be laid open, their deeds weighed with perfect justice, and Allah will speak to each person directly. Even an atom's weight of good or evil will be seen. ۞ 8
