Did Islam spread by the sword?

The short answer

The early Muslim state did expand through wars and conquest, and it would be wrong to deny that. But conquest and conversion are different things. The sources forbid forcing anyone into Islam, the conquered Jews and Christians were allowed to keep their religion, and the sources present invitation, teaching and personal example as the way to spread Islam. The hardest exception, the idol-worshippers of Arabia, is explained below.

Explanation

The Quran's rule is plain: "There shall be no compulsion in [acceptance of] the religion" 1. Its method is invitation: "Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best" 2. When the Prophet ﷺ sent Mu'adh to Yemen, his instructions were to invite people, then teach those who accepted 3.

The hadith show what that looked like in practice. Thumama ibn Uthal, a chief captured by Muslim cavalry, was tied to a pillar of the mosque and asked about his position on three successive days, then released without conditions. Only after he was free did he go, wash and declare his faith, saying the Prophet's face had become the most beloved to him 4. Even a polytheist at war could ask for protection "so that he may hear the words of Allah", and then had to be escorted to safety 5.

At the same time, the early Muslims did fight wars, and later states conquered large territories. The Quran itself commands fighting certain People of the Book "until they give the jizyah" 6, a tax paid by non-Muslims under Muslim rule. That verse is important for this question: it ends the war with payment and protection, not with conversion. The idol-worshippers of Arabia were the exception: classical scholars read 9:5 as accepting only Islam from them, as the note explains. Umar ibn al-Khattab, as he lay dying, urged the next caliph to honour the covenant with these protected non-Muslims, to fight to defend them and not to tax them beyond their ability 7.

Historians generally find that the populations of conquered lands such as Iran, Syria and Egypt became mostly Muslim gradually, over two or more centuries, and that Islam reached much of South-East Asia and of West and East Africa largely through merchants, scholars and Sufi teachers rather than conquering armies, though local rulers and wars also played a part. The Quran's standard remains that Muslims may be just and kind to anyone who does not fight them 8.

There shall be no compulsion in [acceptance of] the religion. The right course has become clear from the wrong. So whoever disbelieves in Taghut and believes in Allah has grasped the most trustworthy handhold with no break in it. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing

Thumama was released unconditionally and then embraced Islam by his own choice.

Narrated Abu Huraira:The Prophet (ﷺ) sent some cavalry towards Najd and they brought a man from the tribe of Banu Hanifa who was called Thumama bin Uthal. They fastened him to one of the pillars of the Mosque. The Prophet went to him and said, "What have you got, O Thumama?" He replied," I have got a good thought, O Muhammad! If you should kill me, you would kill a person who has already killed somebody, and if you should set me free, you would do a favor to one who is grateful, and if you want property, then ask me whatever wealth you want." He was left till the next day when the Prophet (ﷺ) said to him, "What have you got, Thumama? He said, "What I told you, i.e. if you set me free, you would do a favor to one who is grateful." The Prophet (ﷺ) left him till the day after, when he said, "What have you got, O Thumama?" He said, "I have got what I told you. "On that the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Release Thumama." So he (i.e. Thumama) went to a garden of date-palm trees near to the Mosque, took a bath and then entered the Mosque and said, "I testify that None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, and also testify that Muhammad is His Apostle! By Allah, O Muhammad! There was no face on the surface of the earth most disliked by me than yours, but now your face has become the most beloved face to me. By Allah, there was no religion most disliked by me than yours, but now it is the most beloved religion to me. By Allah, there was no town most disliked by me than your town, but now it is the most beloved town to me. Your cavalry arrested me (at the time) when I was intending to perform the `Umra. And now what do you think?" The Prophet (ﷺ) gave him good tidings (congratulated him) and ordered him to perform the `Umra. So when he came to Mecca, someone said to him, "You have become a Sabian?" Thumama replied, "No! By Allah, I have embraced Islam with Muhammad, Apostle of Allah. No, by Allah! Not a single grain of wheat will come to you from Yamamah unless the Prophet gives his permission
