How can I focus when studying, according to Islam?

The short answer

Start with a clear intention and a dua, seek Allah's help and refuse to give in to laziness, study in manageable, regular sessions, cut out what does not concern you, and give your body its right to rest. These habits all come from the Quran and Sunnah.

Explanation

Set your intention. "The reward of deeds depends upon the intentions" 1. When you study to please Allah, to benefit people and to support yourself and your family, the effort itself becomes worship, and that gives you a reason to push through a hard chapter.

Ask for help and refuse helplessness. The Prophet ﷺ said: "cherish that which gives you benefit... and seek help from Allah and do not lose heart" 2. He regularly sought refuge in Allah from worry, grief, "incapacity and laziness" 3. Make that dua before you sit down.

Cut the noise. "Among the excellence of a person's Islam is that he leaves what does not concern him" 4. Put the phone in another room, close the extra tabs, and treat scrolling as something that can wait.

Study in steady, sensible blocks. "The most beloved deed to Allah is the most regular and constant even if it were little" 5. The Prophet ﷺ warned that whoever overburdens himself will not be able to continue, and advised using "the mornings, the afternoons, and during the last hours of the nights" 6. Short, focused sessions at fresh times of day beat one exhausted all-nighter.

Rest is part of the plan. The Prophet ﷺ told a Companion who stayed up all night in worship to sleep too, because "your body has a right on you" 7. Sleep, food and breaks are not wasted time.

Keep going through the hard part. "Indeed, with hardship [will be] ease." Then, "when you have finished [your duties], then stand up [for worship]", directing your longing to your Lord 8. Finish the task, then turn back to Allah before the next one.

Try this tonight: two focused 40-minute sessions after Maghrib or Fajr, phone away, starting with Bismillah and the dua against laziness.

The reward of deeds depends upon intentions.

Narrated 'Umar bin Al-Khattab: I heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) saying, "The reward of deeds depends upon the intentions and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended. So whoever emigrated for worldly benefits or for a woman to marry, his emigration was for what he emigrated for

Your body has a right over you, so balance worship and effort with sleep.

Narrated `Abdullah bin `Amr bin Al-`As:Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said to me, "O `Abdullah! Have I not been informed that you fast during the day and offer prayers all the night." `Abdullah replied, "Yes, O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)!" The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Don't do that; fast for few days and then give it up for few days, offer prayers and also sleep at night, as your body has a right on you, and your wife has a right on you, and your guest has a right on you. And it is sufficient for you to fast three days in a month, as the reward of a good deed is multiplied ten times, so it will be like fasting throughout the year." I insisted (on fasting) and so I was given a hard instruction. I said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! I have power." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Fast like the fasting of the Prophet David (ﷺ) and do not fast more than that." I said, "How was the fasting of the Prophet of Allah, David (ﷺ)?" He said, "Half of the year," (i.e. he used to fast on every alternate day). Afterwards when `Abdullah became old, he used to say, "It would have been better for me if I had accepted the permission of the Prophet (which he gave me i.e. to fast only three days a month)
