Do I have to forgive someone who wronged me and made me angry?

The short answer

Islam allows you to seek fair justice for a wrong done to you, but it strongly encourages forgiving, and promises that the reward for pardoning is "from Allah". Forgiving is a choice that raises your honour; it does not mean pretending nothing happened or staying in harm's way.

Explanation

The Quran is honest about hurt. It permits a response equal to the wrong: "the retribution for an evil act is an evil one like it", and whoever defends themselves after being wronged is not blamed 1. You are not required to be a doormat.

But the same verses go further: "whoever pardons and makes reconciliation - his reward is [due] from Allah", and "whoever is patient and forgives - indeed, that is of the matters [requiring] determination" 1. Allah praises believers who, "when they are angry, they forgive" 2, and describes the people of Paradise as those "who restrain anger and who pardon the people" 3.

Forgiving is for you, too. When Abu Bakr (RA) swore he would stop supporting a relative who had hurt his family, Allah revealed, "let them pardon and overlook. Would you not like that Allah should forgive you?" 4 8. The way you treat people is how you hope Allah will treat you. The Prophet ﷺ added, "no one forgives another except that Allah increases his honor" 5. Forgiving is not losing face; it is gaining it.

It can turn enemies into friends. "Repel [evil] by that [deed] which is better; and thereupon the one whom between you and him is enmity [will become] as though he was a devoted friend", though only the patient reach this 6.

The Prophet's ﷺ example. After a people rejected him harshly, the angel of the mountains offered to crush them. He refused, hoping their descendants would worship Allah 7.

Forgiving someone does not always mean trusting them again straight away, especially where there is abuse or danger. You can forgive in your heart, protect yourself, and still seek fair rights where needed. Start small: make dua for the person, let go of revenge, and ask Allah to heal your heart.

    Quran Ash-Shura · 42:40–43

Retribution equal to the wrong is permitted, but pardon and patience are rewarded by Allah and show great resolve.

40 And the retribution for an evil act is an evil one like it, but whoever pardons and makes reconciliation - his reward is [due] from Allah. Indeed, He does not like wrongdoers 41 And whoever avenges himself after having been wronged - those have not upon them any cause [for blame] 42 The cause is only against the ones who wrong the people and tyrannize upon the earth without right. Those will have a painful punishment 43 And whoever is patient and forgives - indeed, that is of the matters [requiring] determination

When they are angry, they forgive.

Paradise is prepared for those who restrain anger and pardon people.

133 And hasten to forgiveness from your Lord and a garden as wide as the heavens and earth, prepared for the righteous 134 Who spend [in the cause of Allah] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allah loves the doers of good

Let them pardon and overlook; would you not like Allah to forgive you?

And let not those of virtue among you and wealth swear not to give [aid] to their relatives and the needy and the emigrants for the cause of Allah, and let them pardon and overlook. Would you not like that Allah should forgive you? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful

The Prophet ﷺ declined to have a people who rejected him destroyed, hoping their offspring would worship Allah.

Narrated `Aisha:That she asked the Prophet (ﷺ) , 'Have you encountered a day harder than the day of the battle) of Uhud?" The Prophet (ﷺ) replied, "Your tribes have troubled me a lot, and the worse trouble was the trouble on the day of 'Aqaba when I presented myself to Ibn `Abd-Yalail bin `Abd-Kulal and he did not respond to my demand. So I departed, overwhelmed with excessive sorrow, and proceeded on, and could not relax till I found myself at Qarnath-Tha-alib where I lifted my head towards the sky to see a cloud shading me unexpectedly. I looked up and saw Gabriel in it. He called me saying, 'Allah has heard your people's saying to you, and what they have replied back to you, Allah has sent the Angel of the Mountains to you so that you may order him to do whatever you wish to these people.' The Angel of the Mountains called and greeted me, and then said, "O Muhammad! Order what you wish. If you like, I will let Al-Akh-Shabain (i.e. two mountains) fall on them." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "No but I hope that Allah will let them beget children who will worship Allah Alone, and will worship None besides Him

The verse was revealed about Abu Bakr when he swore to stop spending on Mistah for joining the slander.

The people of virtue in religion and expanse in wealth should not swear an oath to stop giving their needy relatives, due to their poverty, amongst the migrants in Allah’s way, due to a sin they committed. They should pardon them and overlook them. Do you not love that Allah should forgive your sins when you pardon them and overlook them? Allah is Forgiving to those who repent amongst His servants and Merciful to them, so His servants should follow Him. This verse was revealed regarding Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) when he swore an oath to stop spending on Mistah, due to his joining in the slander.
