If Allah already knows my fate, do I really have free will?

The short answer

Yes. Islam teaches both: Allah knows and has written everything, and you genuinely choose your actions and are responsible for them. Allah's knowledge does not force you; it simply knows what you will freely choose. The Prophet ﷺ answered this exact question with: "Carry on doing (good) deeds".

Explanation

The Quran speaks of human choice plainly: "whoever wills - let him believe; and whoever wills - let him disbelieve" 1. Allah showed us the way, "be he grateful or be he ungrateful" 2, and inspired the soul with knowledge of its wickedness and its righteousness; the one who purifies it succeeds and the one who corrupts it fails 3. Allah also never burdens a soul beyond its capacity 4. Accountability only makes sense because the choice is real.

At the same time, "you do not will except that Allah wills" 5. Your will is real, but it exists within Allah's will, not outside it. Nothing happens in His creation against His will or beyond His knowledge.

The Companions asked the Prophet ﷺ the very question you are asking. He told them that everyone's place in Paradise or Hell is already written. They said: shall we not rely on what is written and give up deeds? He said: "Carry on doing (good) deeds, for everybody will find easy to do such deeds as will lead him to his destined place", and recited: "As for he who gives and fears Allah and believes in the best [reward], We will ease him toward ease" 6 7.

Think of it this way: you do not know what is written, so it can never be your reason for doing or not doing anything. What you do know is the choice in front of you. Allah's knowledge is complete, but it describes what you will choose; it does not push you.

In a hadith qudsi, Allah says it is our deeds He records and repays, "so let him who finds good, praise Allah, and let him who finds other than that blame no one but himself" 8.

    Quran Al-Kahf · 18:29

Whoever wills, let him believe; whoever wills, let him disbelieve.

And say, "The truth is from your Lord, so whoever wills - let him believe; and whoever wills - let him disbelieve." Indeed, We have prepared for the wrongdoers a fire whose walls will surround them. And if they call for relief, they will be relieved with water like murky oil, which scalds [their] faces. Wretched is the drink, and evil is the resting place

The soul was inspired with its wickedness and righteousness; success lies in purifying it.

7 And [by] the soul and He who proportioned it 8 And inspired it [with discernment of] its wickedness and its righteousness 9 He has succeeded who purifies it 10 And he has failed who instills it [with corruption]

    Quran Al-Baqara · 2:286

Allah does not charge a soul beyond its capacity; it gains what it earned.

Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned. "Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people

Asked why act if all is written, the Prophet ﷺ said, "Carry on doing good deeds"; each is eased to what he was created for.

Narrated `Ali:While the Prophet (ﷺ) was in a funeral procession. he picked up something and started scraping the ground with it, and said, "There is none among you but has his place written for him either in the Hell Fire or in Paradise." They said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! Shall we not depend upon what has been written for us and give up deeds? He said, "Carry on doing (good) deeds, for everybody will find easy to do such deeds as will lead him to his destined place for which he has been created. So he who is destined to be among the happy (in the Hereafter), will find it easy to do the deeds characteristic of such people, while he who is destined to be among the miserable ones, will find it easy to do the deeds characteristic of such people." Then he recited: 'As for him who gives (in charity) and fears Allah, and believes in the best

Allah records our deeds and repays them; whoever finds other than good should blame only himself.

Abu Dharr reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying that Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, said:"O My servants, I have forbidden oppression for Myself and have made it forbidden amongst you, so do not oppress one another. O My servants, all of you are astray except for those I have guided, so seek guidance of Me and I shall guide you, O My servants, all of you are hungry except for those I have fed, so seek food of Me and I shall feed you. O My servants, all of you are naked except for those I have clothed, so seek clothing of Me and I shall clothe you. O My servants, you sin by night and by day, and I forgive all sins, so seek forgiveness of Me and I shall forgive you. O My servants, you will not attain harming Me so as to harm Me, and will not attain benefitting Me so as to benefit Me. O My servants, were the first of you and the last of you, the human of you and the jinn of you to be as pious as the most pious heart of any one man of you, that would not increase My dominion in anything. O My servants, were the first of you and the last of you, the human of you and the jinn of you to be as wicked as the most wicked heart of any one man of you, that would not decrease My dominion in anything. O My servants, were the first of you and the last of you, the human of you and the jinn of you to rise up in one place and make a request of Me, and were I to give everyone what he requested, that would not decrease what I have, any more that a needle decreases the sea if put into it. O My servants, it is but your deeds that I record for you and then recompense you for. So let him who finds good, praise Allah, and let him who finds other than that blame no one but himself." Sa'id said that when Abu Idris Khaulini narrated this hadith he knelt upon his knees
