Is lying ever allowed in Islam?

The short answer

Lying is a serious sin and a sign of hypocrisy. The Prophet ﷺ made a narrow exception in three situations: making peace between people, in war, and in what spouses say to each other to please one another. Even these are about preventing harm and bringing hearts together, never about cheating anyone of their rights.

Explanation

The general rule is clear. "Truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise", while "Falsehood leads to Al-Fajur (i.e. wickedness)", and a person may keep lying "till he is written before Allah, a liar" 1. The Prophet ﷺ named lying among the three signs of a hypocrite 2, and the Quran commands believers to "avoid false statement" 3.

The narrow exceptions. The Prophet ﷺ said: "it is not lawful to lie except in three cases: Something the man tells his wife to please her, to lie during war, and to lie in order to bring peace between the people" 4. Another narration says the Prophet ﷺ did not count as a liar "a man who puts things right between people, saying a word by which he intends only putting things right" 5, and that the peacemaker who says good things "is not a liar" 6.

Look at what these have in common: each prevents harm or builds love. Telling two estranged friends that each spoke kindly of the other; a husband telling his wife she is the most beautiful woman to him. They are not permission to hide debts, deceive a spouse about something important, or lie to get ahead.

Indirect speech. The Prophet ﷺ said Ibrahim (AS) told only three "lies", two of them for Allah's sake, and a third when he told a tyrant that his wife Sarah was "my sister", then explained to her that they were the only believers on earth 7. Scholars explain that these were tawriyah: words with a true meaning (she was his sister in faith) that the listener understood differently. Many scholars say that where a real need arises, a Muslim should use this rather than an outright lie, but it may never be used to cheat anyone or deny them their rights.

So the default is honesty, even when it is costly. When you feel tempted to lie, ask: is this one of the three, done to bring hearts together? If not, find an honest way to say it, or say nothing.

Truthfulness leads to righteousness and Paradise; lying leads to wickedness and the Fire.

Narrated `Abdullah:The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise. And a man keeps on telling the truth until he becomes a truthful person. Falsehood leads to Al-Fajur (i.e. wickedness, evil-doing), and Al-Fajur (wickedness) leads to the (Hell) Fire, and a man may keep on telling lies till he is written before Allah, a liar

Ibrahim (AS) made three statements described as lies, two of them for Allah's sake, when facing idolaters and a tyrant.

Narrated Abu Huraira:Abraham did not tell a lie except on three occasion. Twice for the Sake of Allah when he said, "I am sick," and he said, "(I have not done this but) the big idol has done it." The (third was) that while Abraham and Sarah (his wife) were going (on a journey) they passed by (the territory of) a tyrant. Someone said to the tyrant, "This man (i.e. Abraham) is accompanied by a very charming lady." So, he sent for Abraham and asked him about Sarah saying, "Who is this lady?" Abraham said, "She is my sister." Abraham went to Sarah and said, "O Sarah! There are no believers on the surface of the earth except you and I. This man asked me about you and I have told him that you are my sister, so don't contradict my statement." The tyrant then called Sarah and when she went to him, he tried to take hold of her with his hand, but (his hand got stiff and) he was confounded. He asked Sarah. "Pray to Allah for me, and I shall not harm you." So Sarah asked Allah to cure him and he got cured. He tried to take hold of her for the second time, but (his hand got as stiff as or stiffer than before and) was more confounded. He again requested Sarah, "Pray to Allah for me, and I will not harm you." Sarah asked Allah again and he became alright. He then called one of his guards (who had brought her) and said, "You have not brought me a human being but have brought me a devil." The tyrant then gave Hajar as a girl-servant to Sarah. Sarah came back (to Abraham) while he was praying. Abraham, gesturing with his hand, asked, "What has happened?" She replied, "Allah has spoiled the evil plot of the infidel (or immoral person) and gave me Hajar for service." (Abu Huraira then addressed his listeners saying, "That (Hajar) was your mother, O Bani Ma-is-Sama (i.e. the Arabs, the descendants of Ishmael, Hajar's son)
