What does Islam say about knowledge without action?

The short answer

The Quran strongly criticises saying what you do not do and compares people who carry scripture without acting on it to a donkey carrying books. Knowledge is meant to be lived; the Prophet ﷺ even sought refuge from knowledge that does not benefit. The answer is not to stop learning, but to act on what you learn.

Explanation

Allah asks: "O you who have believed, why do you say what you do not do? Great is hatred in the sight of Allah that you say what you do not do" 1. Tafsir explains that a believer's actions should confirm his words 2.

The Quran gives a vivid image of knowledge that is carried but not lived. Those who were entrusted with the Torah and did not act on it are "like that of a donkey who carries volumes [of books]" 3. The donkey bears the weight but gains nothing from it. Allah also rebukes people who order righteousness while forgetting themselves, though they recite the Scripture: "Then will you not reason?" 4

The Prophet ﷺ described a man thrown into the Fire whom people recognise. They ask him, "Didn't you use to order us to do good deeds?" He replies that he ordered good but did not do it, and forbade evil but did it himself 5. And among his supplications the Prophet ﷺ sought refuge "from the knowledge which does not benefit" 6.

A person will also be asked about "his knowledge and what he did with it" 7. Knowledge is a trust, not a trophy.

Does this mean you should stop learning or stop advising others until you are perfect? No. The warning is against hypocrisy and neglect, not against honest people who are still struggling. The Prophet ﷺ praised the one given wisdom who "acts according to it and teaches it to others" 8: learning, acting and teaching go together.

A simple habit: every time you learn something new, pick one small action to apply that week. Knowledge grows when it is used.

The evidence

    Quran As-Saff · 61:2–3

It is greatly hateful to Allah that you say what you do not do.

2 O you who have believed, why do you say what you do not do 3 Great is hatred in the sight of Allah that you say what you do not do

  2. 2
    Tafsir Al-Mukhtasar fi Tafsir al-Quran · 61:3

It is a most detested thing to Allah that you say what you do not do. It is only appropriate for a believer to be truthful with Allah, and for his actions to confirm his statements.

  3. 3
    Quran Al-Jumu'a · 62:5

Those given the Torah who did not act on it are like a donkey carrying books.

The example of those who were entrusted with the Torah and then did not take it on is like that of a donkey who carries volumes [of books]. Wretched is the example of the people who deny the signs of Allah. And Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people

    Quran Al-Baqara · 2:44

Do you order righteousness and forget yourselves while reciting the Scripture?

A man in the Fire ordered good without doing it and forbade evil while doing it.

Narrated Abu Wail:Somebody said to Usama, "Will you go to so-and-so (i.e. `Uthman) and talk to him (i.e. advise him regarding ruling the country)?" He said, "You see that I don't talk to him. Really I talk to (advise) him secretly without opening a gate (of affliction), for neither do I want to be the first to open it (i.e. rebellion), nor will I say to a man who is my ruler that he is the best of all the people after I have heard something from Allah's Apostle ." They said, What have you heard him saying? He said, "I have heard him saying, "A man will be brought on the Day of Resurrection and thrown in the (Hell) Fire, so that his intestines will come out, and he will go around like a donkey goes around a millstone. The people of (Hell) Fire will gather around him and say: O so-and-so! What is wrong with you? Didn't you use to order us to do good deeds and forbid us to do bad deeds? He will reply: Yes, I used to order you to do good deeds, but I did not do them myself, and I used to forbid you to do bad deeds, yet I used to do them myself

The Prophet ﷺ sought refuge from knowledge that does not benefit.

Zaid b. Alqam reported:I am not going to say anything but only that which Allah's Messenger (may peace be upgn him) used to say. He used to supplicate:" O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from incapacity, from sloth, from cowardice, from miserliness, decrepitude and from torment of the grave. O Allah, grant to my soul the sense of righteousness and purify it, for Thou art the Best Purifier thereof. Thou art the Protecting Friend thereof, and Guardian thereof. O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from the knowledge which does not benefit, from the heart that does not entertain the fear (of Allah), from the soul that does not feel contented and the supplication that is not responded
