Is the punishment of the grave real, and how can I be protected from it?

The short answer

Yes. The Quran points to it and the Prophet ﷺ spoke of it many times, sought refuge from it in every prayer and taught us to do the same. Protection comes through faith, avoiding the sins he warned about, and the duas and practices he taught.

Explanation

The Quran says of Pharaoh's people: "The Fire, they are exposed to it morning and evening", and then, on the Day the Hour arrives, they enter the severest punishment 1. Scholars note this exposure comes before the Day of Judgment, in the barzakh. The Prophet ﷺ also said the verse "Allah keeps firm those who believe" (14:27) was revealed about the punishment of the grave 2.

The Prophet ﷺ once passed some graves of people who had died as polytheists and said they were passing through the ordeal of the grave; were it not that people would stop burying their dead, he would have let them hear it. Then he told his Companions to seek refuge with Allah from the punishment of the grave 3.

Sins he named. Passing two graves, he said one of them "never saved himself from being soiled with his urine while the other used to go about with calumnies", spreading gossip to make enmity between people 4. Both are easy to fall into and easy to avoid.

Duas he taught. He used to say: "O Allah! I seek refuge with you from the punishment in the grave and from the punishment in the Hell fire and from the afflictions of life and death, and the afflictions of Al-Masih Ad-Dajjal" 5. He told us to say this after the tashahhud, before ending the prayer 6.

Surah al-Mulk. He said a surah of thirty verses intercedes for its reader until he is forgiven, and that it is Surah al-Mulk 7. Many Muslims recite it every night.

The real protection is a life of faith that lets you answer the questions of the grave with certainty, so keep your prayer, guard your tongue and make this dua a daily habit.

The evidence

    Quran Ghafir · 40:45–46

Pharaoh's people are exposed to the Fire morning and evening before the Hour.

45 So Allah protected him from the evils they plotted, and the people of Pharaoh were enveloped by the worst of punishment 46 The Fire, they are exposed to it morning and evening. And the Day the Hour appears [it will be said], "Make the people of Pharaoh enter the severest punishment

14:27 was revealed concerning the punishment of the grave.

Narrated Al-Bara' bin 'Azib : The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "When a faithful believer is made to sit in his grave, then (the angels) come to him and he testifies that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and Muhammad is Allah's Apostle. And that corresponds to Allah's statement: Allah will keep firm those who believe with the word that stands firm . . . (14.27). The Prophet ﷺ heard people being punished in their graves and told the Companions to seek refuge from it.

Abu Sa'id al-Khudri reported:I did not hear this hadith from Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) directly but it was Zaid b. Thabit who narrated it from him. As Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) was going along with us towards the dwellings of Bani an-Najjar, riding upon his pony, it shied and he was about to fall. He found four, five or six graves there. He said: Who amongst you knows about those lying in the graves? A person said: It is I. Thereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: In what state did they die? He said: They died as polytheists. He said: These people are passing through the ordeal in the graves. If it were not the reason that you would stop burying (your dead) in the graves on listening to the torment in the grave which I am listening to, I would have certainly made you hear that. Then turning his face towards us, he said: Seek refuge with Allah from the torment of Hell. They said: We seek refuge with Allah from the torment of Hell. He said: Seek refuge with Allah from the torment of the grave. They said: We seek refuge with Allah from the torment of the grave. He said: Seek refuge with Allah from turmoil, its visible and invisible (aspects), and they said: We seek refuge with Allah from turmoil and its visible and invisible aspects and he said: Seek refuge with Allah from the turmoil of the Dajjal, and they said We seek refuge with Allah from the turmoil of the Dajjal

Indeed, one of them never saved himself from being soiled with his urine while the other used to go about with calumnies (to make enmity between friends). The Prophet (ﷺ) then asked for a green leaf of a date-palm tree, broke it into two pieces and put one on each grave.
