Is it okay to study secular subjects in Islam?

The short answer

Yes. Beneficial worldly knowledge such as medicine, engineering, languages or business is permitted and can be rewarded when studied with a good intention. The Prophet ﷺ recognised worldly expertise, ordered a Companion to learn a foreign script, and encouraged medical treatment. The condition is that you also learn the basics of your religion and avoid knowledge that harms.

Explanation

Islam does not split life into "religious" and "worthless". The Quran praises those who reflect on creation 1 and tells people to travel and observe how Allah began creation 2. It calls the variety of languages and colours "signs for those of knowledge" 3.

The Prophet ﷺ respected technical expertise. He once remarked that farmers grafting (pollinating) their trees might do better without it; they stopped, the yield fell, and he told them, "You have better knowledge (of a technical skill) in the affairs of the world" 4. He also ordered Zayd ibn Thabit to learn the writing of the Jews so he could handle the Prophet's correspondence, and Zayd mastered it in about two weeks 5. That is language study for the service of the community.

Medicine is a clear example. The Prophet ﷺ said Allah created no disease without also creating its treatment 6. Every cure discovered is part of finding what Allah has already placed in the world.

What turns this study into worship is intention. "The reward of deeds depends upon the intentions" 7. A student of nursing who intends to relieve suffering, or an engineer who intends to provide for a family and build something useful, is earning reward in class.

Two limits keep it balanced. First, learn what every Muslim must know about belief and worship; a degree does not replace that. Second, avoid knowledge that only harms. The Prophet ﷺ sought refuge "from the knowledge which does not benefit" 8.

So study hard, choose something useful, and keep your intention for Allah.

Praise for those who reflect on the creation of the heavens and the earth.

190 Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding 191 Who remember Allah while standing or sitting or [lying] on their sides and give thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth, [saying], "Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly; exalted are You [above such a thing]; then protect us from the punishment of the Fire

    Quran Ar-Room · 30:22

The variety of languages and colours are signs for those of knowledge.

The Prophet ﷺ said people know their worldly, technical affairs better.

Anas reported that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) happened to pass by the people who had been busy in grafting the trees. Thereupon he said:If you were not to do it, it might be good for you. (So they abandoned this practice) and there was a decline in the yield. He (the Holy Prophet) happened to pass by them (and said): What has gone wrong with your trees? They said: You said so and so. Thereupon he said: You have better knowledge (of a technical skill) in the affairs of the world
