How can I rest without feeling guilty about being unproductive?

The short answer

Rest is not automatically laziness or weak faith. The Prophet ﷺ affirmed that the body and family have rights, and taught people not to overburden themselves in religion [1][2]. Choose a sustainable pace and ask for help if exhaustion is affecting your health.

Evidence 1 2 3

Explanation

In an authentic report, Salman advised Abu al-Darda' that his Lord, his own self and his family each had rights over him, and the Prophet ﷺ agreed that Salman had spoken truthfully 1. That guidance pushes back against treating constant exhaustion as a virtue. The Prophet ﷺ also taught that religion is easy and warned against taking on a burden one cannot sustain 2.

He described the deeds most beloved to Allah as those done consistently, even if small 3. A smaller routine that you can maintain may serve you better than a burst of work followed by collapse. This does not mean that every difficult task is harmful or that obligations may be ignored whenever they feel inconvenient. It means you should consider your real capacity, protect necessary sleep and health, and reduce optional commitments when needed.

Try naming what must be done today, what can wait, and where someone else can help. Take a break without using it to attack yourself. If fatigue is persistent or comes with physical or mental symptoms, speak to a healthcare professional. The Sunnah provides principles of balance and steadiness; it does not diagnose burnout or prescribe a particular productivity system.

Salman reminded Abu al-Darda' that his body and family had rights, and the Prophet ﷺ agreed.

Narrated Abu Juhaifa:The Prophet (ﷺ) made a bond of brotherhood between Salman and Abu Ad-Darda.' Salman paid a visit to Abu Ad-Darda' and found Um Ad-Darda' dressed in shabby clothes and asked her why she was in that state. She replied, "Your brother Abu Ad-Darda' is not interested in (the luxuries of) this world." In the meantime Abu Ad-Darda' came and prepared a meal for Salman. Salman requested Abu Ad- Darda' to eat (with him), but Abu Ad-Darda' said, "I am fasting." Salman said, "I am not going to eat unless you eat." So, Abu Ad-Darda' ate (with Salman). When it was night and (a part of the night passed), Abu Ad-Darda' got up (to offer the night prayer), but Salman told him to sleep and Abu Ad- Darda' slept. After sometime Abu Ad-Darda' again got up but Salman told him to sleep. When it was the last hours of the night, Salman told him to get up then, and both of them offered the prayer. Salman told Abu Ad-Darda', "Your Lord has a right on you, your soul has a right on you, and your family has a right on you; so you should give the rights of all those who has a right on you." Abu Ad- Darda' came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and narrated the whole story. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Salman has spoken the truth

The Prophet ﷺ warned against overburdening oneself in religion.

So you should not be extremists, but try to be near to perfection and receive the good tidings that you will be rewarded; and gain strength by worshipping in the mornings, the afternoons, and during the last hours of the nights."
