Is it better to work than to ask people for money? Is begging haram?

The short answer

Earning your own living is honoured in Islam: the Prophet ﷺ said no one eats better food than what he earns with his own hands, and that even gathering and selling firewood is better than asking people. Asking others for money is not permitted except in real need, which the Prophet ﷺ defined as three situations.

Explanation

Work is dignity. "Nobody has ever eaten a better meal than that which one has earned by working with one's own hands. The Prophet of Allah, David ... used to eat from the earnings of his manual labor" 1. The Prophet ﷺ said that every prophet shepherded sheep, and that he himself had tended sheep for the people of Makkah for a small wage 2. No honest job is beneath a believer.

The Quran connects work and worship: after Friday prayer, "disperse within the land and seek from the bounty of Allah" 3, and Allah made the earth easy for us, "so walk among its slopes and eat of His provision" 4.

Begging is a last resort. "It is better for anyone of you to take a rope (and cut) and bring a bundle of wood (from the forest) over his back and sell it... rather than to ask the people who may give him or not" 5. Someone who keeps begging without need will come on the Day of Resurrection "without any piece of flesh on his face" 6. And the one who holds back from asking, Allah "will make him self-sufficient" 7.

When asking is allowed. The Prophet ﷺ told Qabisa (RA) that asking is permissible only for three: someone who has taken on a debt (until it is paid), someone whose property was destroyed by a disaster (until he can support himself), and someone struck by poverty confirmed by trustworthy people 8. So a person in genuine hardship should not feel ashamed to seek help, and the community should give it.

If you are struggling to find work, take any lawful work available while you look for better, and keep asking Allah, not people, for your provision.

Asking is permitted only for the indebted, the victim of disaster, and the confirmed poor.

Qabisa b. Mukhariq al-Hilali said:I was under debt and I came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and begged from him regarding it. He said: Wait till we receive Sadaqa, so that we order that to be given to you. He again said: Qabisa, begging is not permissible but for one of the three (classes) of persons: one who has incurred debt, for him begging is permissible till he pays that off, after which he must stop it; a man whose property has been destroyed by a calamity which has smitten him, for him begging is permissible till he gets what will support life, or will provide him reasonable subsistence; and a person who has been smitten by poverty. the genuineness of which is confirmed by three intelligent members of this peoples for him begging is permissible till he gets what will support him, or will provide him subsistence. Qabisa, besides these three (every other reason) for begging is forbidden, and one who engages in such consumes that what is forbidden
