Does haram income stop my duas from being accepted?

The short answer

Haram income is a serious barrier. The Prophet ﷺ described a traveller raising his hands in dua while his food, drink and clothing were haram, and asked, "How can then his supplication be accepted?" Allah accepts only what is good, and every person will be asked how they earned their wealth and how they spent it.

Explanation

"O people, Allah is Good and He therefore, accepts only that which is good." The Prophet ﷺ then described a man on a long journey, dishevelled and dusty, raising his hands: "O Lord, O Lord", while "his diet is unlawful, his drink is unlawful, and his clothes are unlawful". He asked, "How can then his supplication be accepted?" 1. The man had many reasons for his dua to be answered, and haram earnings blocked them.

Allah commands the messengers to "eat from the good foods and work righteousness" 2, and, as the same hadith points out, He gave the believers the same command 1. Charity follows the same rule: Allah accepts charity only from honestly earned money, and even a date of it He grows like a mountain 3.

The Prophet ﷺ warned that "a time will come when one will not care how one gains one's money, legally or illegally" 4. Every person will be asked on the Day of Judgement "about his wealth and how he earned it and where he spent it on" 5. Lawfully earned wealth spent well is excellent, but wealth taken unlawfully "will be a witness against him on the Day of Resurrection" 6.

What to do:

  • Audit your income: interest, fraud, selling haram products, or cheating an employer all need to stop.
  • If part of your work involves haram, seek to change your role or job, and ask a scholar about your case.
  • Return or give away what you took unlawfully.
  • Make the dua the Prophet ﷺ taught: "O Allah, suffice me with Your lawful against Your prohibited, and make me independent of all those besides You" 7.

A smaller halal income with barakah is better than a large one that stands between you and Allah.

    Hadith Sahih Muslim 1015
    Sahih Muslim

Allah is Good and accepts only good; how can the dua of one living on haram be accepted?

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:O people, Allah is Good and He therefore, accepts only that which is good. And Allah commanded the believers as He commanded the Messengers by saying: "O Messengers, eat of the good things, and do good deeds; verily I am aware of what you do" (xxiii. 51). And He said: "O those who believe, eat of the good things that We gave you" (ii. 172). He then made a mention of a person who travels widely, his hair disheveled and covered with dust. He lifts his hand towards the sky (and thus makes the supplication): "O Lord, O Lord," whereas his diet is unlawful, his drink is unlawful, and his clothes are unlawful and his nourishment is unlawful. How can then his supplication be accepted?

Lawfully earned wealth spent well is excellent; wealth taken unlawfully will witness against its owner.

Narrated Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri:Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) ascended the pulpit and said, "Nothing worries me as to what will happen to you after me, except the temptation of worldly blessings which will be conferred on you." Then he mentioned the worldly pleasures. He started with the one (i.e. the blessings) and took up the other (i.e. the pleasures). A man got up saying, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! Can the good bring about evil?" The Prophet (ﷺ) remained silent and we thought that he was being inspired divinely, so all the people kept silent with awe. Then the Prophet (ﷺ) wiped the sweat off his face and asked, "Where is the present questioner?" "Do you think wealth is good?" he repeated thrice, adding, "No doubt, good produces nothing but good. Indeed it is like what grows on the banks of a stream which either kills or nearly kills the grazing animals because of gluttony except the vegetation-eating animal which eats till both its flanks are full (i.e. till it gets satisfied) and then stands in the sun and defecates and urinates and again starts grazing. This worldly property is sweet vegetation. How excellent the wealth of the Muslim is, if it is collected through legal means and is spent in Allah's Cause and on orphans, poor people and travelers. But he who does not take it legally is like an eater who is never satisfied and his wealth will be a witness against him on the Day of Resurrection
