- Is it haram to eat meat that isn't halal-certified? A certificate is not what makes meat halal. Meat is halal when it comes from a lawful animal that was slaughtered properly by a Muslim, or by a Jew or Christian, with the blood made to flow. Pork, carrion and animals killed by a blow or strangling are haram, and scholars differ over some modern slaughter methods, so certification is a useful way to be sure.
- Is alcohol haram, even a small amount? Yes. Every intoxicant is forbidden, and the Prophet ﷺ said that if a large amount of something intoxicates, even a small amount of it is forbidden. The ban covers not only drinking but also serving, selling and carrying it.
- What is the Sunnah way of eating and drinking? Say "Bismillah" before you start, eat with your right hand from what is in front of you, praise Allah when you finish, and do not overeat. These simple habits, taught by the Prophet ﷺ, turn an ordinary meal into an act of gratitude.
- Can I get a tattoo as a Muslim? Permanent tattoos are forbidden: the Prophet ﷺ cursed both the person who tattoos and the person who gets tattooed. Temporary adornment such as henna is a different matter and is allowed. If you already have a tattoo, sincere repentance is what matters, and scholars explain that your prayers are valid.
- Is smoking or vaping haram? The Quran and hadith do not mention tobacco by name, but they forbid harming yourself and others and wasting wealth. Because smoking is now known to cause serious harm, most contemporary scholars hold that it is haram, and they apply the same reasoning to vaping and shisha.
- Does Islam encourage exercise and sport? Yes. The Prophet ﷺ said a strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than a weak one, and he himself raced, encouraged archery and enjoyed watching sporting skill. Exercise is praiseworthy as long as it does not involve exposing the body, missing prayer, or gambling.
- What does Islam say about sleep and health? Sleep is one of Allah's signs and a mercy, and your body has a right to rest. The Sunnah is to sleep early after Isha, lie on your right side with the bedtime dua, and look after your health, including seeking medical treatment when you are ill.
- Can Muslim men wear gold or silk? No. The Prophet ﷺ declared gold and silk forbidden for the men of his ummah and permitted for its women. Men may wear a silver ring, as the Prophet ﷺ did, and silk is allowed for a man only for a medical need.
- Is hijab compulsory, and do I have to wear the niqab? Covering the hair and body in front of men who are not close relatives is an obligation agreed on by the four schools of law, based on the Quran. Whether the face must also be covered is a genuine difference of opinion: some schools and scholars consider the niqab obligatory, others consider it recommended but not required.
- How should a Muslim dress? Islam gives principles rather than a uniform: cover what must be covered, dress modestly, avoid pride and extravagance, do not imitate the opposite sex, and men should not wear gold or silk. Within these limits, looking clean, smart and beautiful is encouraged, because Allah loves beauty.
- Is music haram in Islam? The majority of scholars, including the four schools of law, hold that musical instruments are forbidden, with an exception for the daf (frame drum) at weddings and Eid. Singing with wholesome words, without instruments, is allowed by many. A minority of scholars permit instruments, so this is a real difference of opinion, but all agree that songs promoting sin are haram.
- Is joking allowed in Islam? Yes. The Prophet ﷺ joked with his Companions, but he only ever said what was true. Joking becomes wrong when it involves lying, mocking people, frightening them, or so much laughter that the heart becomes hard.
- Is it okay for a Muslim to use social media? Social media is a tool, so it is not haram in itself. What matters is how you use it: the same rules that govern your tongue and your eyes apply to your posts, comments, shares and scrolling.
- Can Muslims be friends with non-Muslims? Yes, Muslims may be kind, fair and friendly with non-Muslims who are not hostile to them: the Quran explicitly allows it. What is forbidden is taking them as allies against the believers or letting a friendship pull you away from your faith. Your closest companions, who shape your religion, should ideally be believers.
- How do I choose good friends in Islam? Choose friends who remind you of Allah and bring out the best in you, because friends shape your religion. The Prophet ﷺ compared a good friend to a perfume seller and a bad one to a blacksmith's furnace, and said a person follows the religion of his friend.
