Is insurance haram in Islam? Most contemporary scholars and fiqh councils consider conventional commercial insurance impermissible because it involves excessive uncertainty (gharar), an element of gambling, and usually interest-based investment. They permit cooperative insurance (takaful), where members pool contributions to help whoever suffers a loss, and many allow insurance that the law makes compulsory.
