How do I pray istikhara?

The short answer

Pray two voluntary rak'ahs (not one of the obligatory prayers), then say the istikhara dua taught by the Prophet ﷺ and name the matter you are deciding. You are asking Allah, who knows what you do not, to make it easy and blessed if it is good for you, and to turn it away from you if it is not.

Explanation

Istikhara means asking Allah to choose what is best. The Prophet ﷺ took it so seriously that he taught it to his Companions "in all matters", the way he taught them a surah of the Quran 1.

How to do it. The method is in the hadith itself 1:

  1. When you are intending to do something, or, in another wording, "worried about a matter" 5, pray two rak'ahs "other than the compulsory ones" 1.
  2. After the prayer, say the dua. Its opening words, Allahumma inni astakhiruka bi'ilmika, mean "O Allah! I ask guidance from Your knowledge". You then ask Him to decree the matter and bless it if He knows it is good for your religion, your livelihood and your final outcome, and to turn it away from you, and you from it, if it is bad 1.
  3. Mention your need where the dua says "this matter"; every wording of the hadith ends by telling you to name it 1 2.

You can read the dua from a card or your phone. Nothing in the hadith requires you to have it memorised.

Why it matters. The dua admits that Allah knows and you do not, and that He has power and you do not 1. That honesty is freeing. Allah reminds us that "perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you" 3.

What comes after. Istikhara is not a replacement for thinking or asking good people for advice. Allah told the Prophet ﷺ to consult others, and then "when you have decided, then rely upon Allah" 4. So pray, consult, decide, and trust Him. The dua ends by asking Allah to make you content with whatever He decrees 1, which is the real peace istikhara brings.

The evidence

  1. 1
    Hadith Sahih al-Bukhari 1166
    Sahih Bukhari

The Prophet ﷺ taught istikhara in all matters, with two voluntary rak'ahs followed by the full dua and naming the need.

Narrated Jabir bin `Abdullah:The Prophet (ﷺ) used to teach us the way of doing Istikhara (Istikhara means to ask Allah to guide one to the right sort of action concerning any job or a deed), in all matters as he taught us the Suras of the Qur'an. He said, "If anyone of you thinks of doing any job he should offer a two rak`at prayer other than the compulsory ones and say (after the prayer): -- 'Allahumma inni astakhiruka bi'ilmika, Wa astaqdiruka bi-qudratika, Wa as'alaka min fadlika Al-`azlm Fa-innaka taqdiru Wala aqdiru, Wa ta'lamu Wala a'lamu, Wa anta 'allamu l-ghuyub. Allahumma, in kunta ta'lam anna hadha-lamra Khairun li fi dini wa ma'ashi wa'aqibati `Amri (or 'ajili `Amri wa'ajilihi) Faqdirhu wa yas-sirhu li thumma barik li Fihi, Wa in kunta ta'lamu anna hadha-lamra shar-run li fi dini wa ma'ashi wa'aqibati `Amri (or fi'ajili `Amri wa ajilihi) Fasrifhu anni was-rifni anhu. Waqdir li al-khaira haithu kana Thumma ardini bihi.' (O Allah! I ask guidance from Your knowledge, And Power from Your Might and I ask for Your great blessings. You are capable and I am not. You know and I do not and You know the unseen. O Allah! If You know that this job is good for my religion and my subsistence and in my Hereafter--(or said: If it is better for my present and later needs)--Then You ordain it for me and make it easy for me to get, And then bless me in it, and if You know that this job is harmful to me In my religion and subsistence and in the Hereafter--(or said: If it is worse for my present and later needs)--Then keep it away from me and let me be away from it. And ordain for me whatever is good for me, And make me satisfied with it). The Prophet (ﷺ) added that then the person should name (mention) his need

Another wording of the same teaching, with the dua said after finishing the prayer and the matter named in it.

Narrated Jabir bin `Abdullah:As-Salami: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) used to teach his companions to perform the prayer of Istikhara for each and every matter just as he used to teach them the Suras from the Qur'an He used to say, "If anyone of you intends to do something, he should offer a two rak`at prayer other than the compulsory prayers, and after finishing it, he should say: O Allah! I consult You, for You have all knowledge, and appeal to You to support me with Your Power and ask for Your Bounty, for You are able to do things while I am not, and You know while I do not; and You are the Knower of the Unseen. O Allah If You know It this matter (name your matter) is good for me both at present and in the future, (or in my religion), in my this life and in the Hereafter, then fulfill it for me and make it easy for me, and then bestow Your Blessings on me in that matter. O Allah! If You know that this matter is not good for me in my religion, in my this life and in my coming Hereafter (or at present or in the future), then divert me from it and choose for me what is good wherever it may be, and make me be pleased with it." Consult others, and when you have decided, rely upon Allah.

So by mercy from Allah, [O Muhammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult them in the matter. And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who rely [upon Him]
