What if I don't feel anything or see a dream after istikhara?

The short answer

That is normal, and it does not mean your istikhara failed. The Prophet ﷺ never said to wait for a dream or a special feeling. You asked Allah to make the matter easy if it is good and to turn it away if it is not, so go ahead with your best, well-advised decision and watch how Allah opens or closes the way.

Explanation

Many people expect a dream, a green light, or a sudden calm after istikhara. The hadith that teaches istikhara mentions none of these 1. It teaches two rak'ahs and a dua, and then the person simply names their need.

Look closely at what the dua asks for. If the matter is good for you, "ordain it for me and make it easy for me"; if it is harmful, "keep it away from me and let me be away from it"; and then "ordain for me whatever is good for me" and "make me satisfied with it" 1. The answer, in other words, comes through what Allah makes easy or closes, and through the contentment He puts in your heart afterwards, not through a vision.

The Companions understood it this way. When they had to decide how to dig the Prophet's ﷺ grave, they prayed istikhara, then sent for two gravediggers and agreed to go with whichever arrived first 2. They prayed, then acted, and let events settle it.

So after istikhara, do the normal, wise things: gather information, ask trustworthy people, and make the best decision you can. Allah told His Prophet ﷺ, "when you have decided, then rely upon Allah" 3, and "whoever relies upon Allah, then He is sufficient for him" 4.

If things later go differently from what you hoped, remember that you asked Allah for what is truly good, and "perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you" 5. The Prophet ﷺ taught us not to torment ourselves with "if only I had done that", but to say that Allah decreed what He willed 6.

So decide, and let go of the worry. That trust is the whole point of istikhara.

The istikhara method and dua; it asks Allah to make the matter easy or turn it away, and to make you content, with no mention of dreams.

Narrated Jabir bin `Abdullah:The Prophet (ﷺ) used to teach us the way of doing Istikhara (Istikhara means to ask Allah to guide one to the right sort of action concerning any job or a deed), in all matters as he taught us the Suras of the Qur'an. He said, "If anyone of you thinks of doing any job he should offer a two rak`at prayer other than the compulsory ones and say (after the prayer): -- 'Allahumma inni astakhiruka bi'ilmika, Wa astaqdiruka bi-qudratika, Wa as'alaka min fadlika Al-`azlm Fa-innaka taqdiru Wala aqdiru, Wa ta'lamu Wala a'lamu, Wa anta 'allamu l-ghuyub. Allahumma, in kunta ta'lam anna hadha-lamra Khairun li fi dini wa ma'ashi wa'aqibati `Amri (or 'ajili `Amri wa'ajilihi) Faqdirhu wa yas-sirhu li thumma barik li Fihi, Wa in kunta ta'lamu anna hadha-lamra shar-run li fi dini wa ma'ashi wa'aqibati `Amri (or fi'ajili `Amri wa ajilihi) Fasrifhu anni was-rifni anhu. Waqdir li al-khaira haithu kana Thumma ardini bihi.' (O Allah! I ask guidance from Your knowledge, And Power from Your Might and I ask for Your great blessings. You are capable and I am not. You know and I do not and You know the unseen. O Allah! If You know that this job is good for my religion and my subsistence and in my Hereafter--(or said: If it is better for my present and later needs)--Then You ordain it for me and make it easy for me to get, And then bless me in it, and if You know that this job is harmful to me In my religion and subsistence and in the Hereafter--(or said: If it is worse for my present and later needs)--Then keep it away from me and let me be away from it. And ordain for me whatever is good for me, And make me satisfied with it). The Prophet (ﷺ) added that then the person should name (mention) his need

The Companions prayed istikhara over the Prophet's ﷺ grave and then let whichever gravedigger came first settle the matter.

It was narrated that Anas bin Malik said:“When the Prophet (ﷺ) died, there was a man in Al-Madinah who used to make a niche in the grave and another who used to dig graves without a niche. They said: ‘Let us pray Istikharah to our Lord and call for them both, and whichever of them comes first, we will let him do it.’ So they were both sent for, and the one who used to make the niche-grave came first, so they made a niche-grave for the Prophet (ﷺ).”

So by mercy from Allah, [O Muhammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you. Seek help from Allah and do not lose heart; do not say "if only", for it opens the door to Satan.

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:A strong believer is better and is more lovable to Allah than a weak believer, and there is good in everyone, (but) cherish that which gives you benefit (in the Hereafter) and seek help from Allah and do not lose heart, and if anything (in the form of trouble) comes to you, don't say: If I had not done that, it would not have happened so and so, but say: Allah did that what He had ordained to do and your" if" opens the (gate) for the Satan
