How should I make big decisions in Islam?

The short answer

The Quran and Sunnah give a clear pattern: make sure the options are halal, find out the facts, consult people you trust, pray istikhara, then decide calmly and rely on Allah. Once you have done that, you do not need to torment yourself with "what if", because the outcome is in Allah's hands.

Explanation

Islam does not ask you to decide by gut feeling alone, or to sit passively waiting for a sign. The texts point to a simple pattern.

1. Check the boundaries. If Allah and His Messenger have already ruled on something, there is no decision to make 1. Your real choices are among the permissible options.

2. Get the facts. Allah warns believers to verify information before acting on it, so they do not harm people "out of ignorance" and end up regretful 2.

3. Consult. Allah told the Prophet ﷺ himself to "consult them in the matter" 3, and He praises believers "whose affair is [determined by] consultation among themselves" 4. Ask people who are wise, experienced and trustworthy.

4. Pray istikhara. The Prophet ﷺ taught his Companions to pray two rak'ahs and ask Allah, who knows and has power, to decree the matter for them if it is good and to turn it away if it is not 5.

5. Decide without rushing. The Prophet ﷺ praised a man for two traits that Allah loves: forbearance and deliberateness 6. Take the time a big decision deserves, then commit.

6. Rely on Allah. The same verse that commands consultation continues, "when you have decided, then rely upon Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who rely [upon Him]" 3.

7. Let go of "if only". If things turn out differently, the Prophet ﷺ taught us not to say "if I had done that, this would not have happened", because that "if" opens the door to Satan. Instead, say that Allah decreed what He willed, and keep going 7.

This is how you can make a hard decision and still sleep at night: you did your part, and you left the result with the One who knows the unseen.

The evidence

  1. 1
    Quran Al-Ahzaab · 33:36

When Allah and His Messenger have decided a matter, a believer has no choice in it.

It is not for a believing man or a believing woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decided a matter, that they should [thereafter] have any choice about their affair. And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly strayed into clear error

  2. 2
    Quran Al-Hujuraat · 49:6

Verify information before acting on it, lest you harm people out of ignorance and regret it.

O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful

  3. 3
    Quran Aal-i-Imraan · 3:159

Consult them in the matter, and when you have decided, rely upon Allah.

So by mercy from Allah, [O Muhammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult them in the matter. And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who rely [upon Him]

  4. 4
    Quran Ash-Shura · 42:38

Believers conduct their affairs by consultation among themselves.

And those who have responded to their lord and established prayer and whose affair is [determined by] consultation among themselves, and from what We have provided them, they spend

The istikhara prayer, taught for every matter.

Narrated Jabir:The Prophet (ﷺ) used to teach us the Istikhara for each and every matter as he used to teach us the Suras from the Holy Qur'an. (He used to say), "If anyone of you intends to do something, he should offer a two-rak`at prayer other than the obligatory prayer, and then say: 'Allahumma inni astakhiruka bi'ilmika, wa astaqdiruka biqudratika, wa as'aluka min fadlika-l-'azim, fa innaka taqdiru wala aqdiru, wa ta'lamu wala a'lamu, wa anta'allamu-l-ghuyub. Allahumma in kunta ta'lamu anna hadha-lamra khairun li fi dini wa ma'ashi wa 'aqibati `Amri (or said, fi 'ajili `Amri wa ajilihi) fa-qdurhu li, Wa in kunta ta'lamu anna ha-dha-l-amra sharrun li fi dini wa ma'ashi wa 'aqibati `Amri (or said, fi ajili `Amri wa ajilihi) fasrifhu 'anni was-rifni 'anhu wa aqdur li alkhaira haithu kana, thumma Raddani bihi," Then he should mention his matter (need)

Seek Allah's help, do not lose heart, and do not say "if only" after something befalls you.

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:A strong believer is better and is more lovable to Allah than a weak believer, and there is good in everyone, (but) cherish that which gives you benefit (in the Hereafter) and seek help from Allah and do not lose heart, and if anything (in the form of trouble) comes to you, don't say: If I had not done that, it would not have happened so and so, but say: Allah did that what He had ordained to do and your" if" opens the (gate) for the Satan
