With hardship comes ease, stated twice.
5 For indeed, with hardship [will be] ease 6 Indeed, with hardship [will be] ease
Worry, sadness and sabr.
Worry and sadness touched prophets and the righteous. These texts show that grief is human, that it is seen and rewarded, and they give the Quran's comfort, the Prophet's ﷺ duas, and his instruction to seek treatment.
With hardship comes ease, stated twice.
5 For indeed, with hardship [will be] ease 6 Indeed, with hardship [will be] ease
Hearts find rest in the remembrance of Allah.
Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured
Yaqub (AS) grieves deeply, complains only to Allah, and tells his sons not to despair of relief from Allah.
84 And he turned away from them and said, "Oh, my sorrow over Joseph," and his eyes became white from grief, for he was [of that] a suppressor 85 They said, "By Allah, you will not cease remembering Joseph until you become fatally ill or become of those who perish 86 He said, "I only complain of my suffering and my grief to Allah, and I know from Allah that which you do not know 87 O my sons, go and find out about Joseph and his brother and despair not of relief from Allah. Indeed, no one despairs of relief from Allah except the disbelieving people
Seek help through patience and prayer; Allah is with the patient.
O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient
Trials of fear, hunger and loss, with good tidings for the patient who say "to Allah we belong and to Him we return".
155 And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient 156 Who, when disaster strikes them, say, "Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return 157 Those are the ones upon whom are blessings from their Lord and mercy. And it is those who are the [rightly] guided
Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity, and teaches a dua not to be burdened beyond our ability.
Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned. "Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people
Allah tells the Prophet ﷺ his Lord has not left him nor detested him, and the Hereafter is better for him.
3 Your Lord has not taken leave of you, [O Muhammad], nor has He detested [you] 4 And the Hereafter is better for you than the first [life] 5 And your Lord is going to give you, and you will be satisfied
Allah knew the Prophet ﷺ was saddened by what people said.
We know that you, [O Muhammad], are saddened by what they say. And indeed, they do not call you untruthful, but it is the verses of Allah that the wrongdoers reject
Allah knows the Prophet's ﷺ chest is constrained, and directs him to praise, prostration and worship.
97 And We already know that your breast is constrained by what they say 98 So exalt [Allah] with praise of your Lord and be of those who prostrate [to Him] 99 And worship your Lord until there comes to you the certainty (death)
Be patient, your patience is only through Allah, and do not grieve or be distressed.
And be patient, [O Muhammad], and your patience is not but through Allah. And do not grieve over them and do not be in distress over what they conspire
In the cave the Prophet ﷺ told his companion, "Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us."
If you do not aid the Prophet - Allah has already aided him when those who disbelieved had driven him out [of Makkah] as one of two, when they were in the cave and he said to his companion, "Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us." And Allah sent down his tranquillity upon him and supported him with angels you did not see and made the word of those who disbelieved the lowest, while the word of Allah - that is the highest. And Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise
Maryam, in the pains of childbirth, is told "Do not grieve" and given water and dates.
23 And the pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a palm tree. She said, "Oh, I wish I had died before this and was in oblivion, forgotten 24 But he called her from below her, "Do not grieve; your Lord has provided beneath you a stream 25 And shake toward you the trunk of the palm tree; it will drop upon you ripe, fresh dates 26 So eat and drink and be contented. And if you see from among humanity anyone, say, 'Indeed, I have vowed to the Most Merciful abstention, so I will not speak today to [any] man
Yunus (AS) calls on Allah from the darkness and is saved from distress, as are the believers.
87 And [mention] the man of the fish, when he went off in anger and thought that We would not decree [anything] upon him. And he called out within the darknesses, "There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers 88 So We responded to him and saved him from the distress. And thus do We save the believers
Answering fear with "Sufficient for us is Allah, and He is the best Disposer of affairs."
Those to whom hypocrites said, "Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them." But it [merely] increased them in faith, and they said, "Sufficient for us is Allah, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs
The patient will be given their reward without account.
Say, "O My servants who have believed, fear your Lord. For those who do good in this world is good, and the earth of Allah is spacious. Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without account
The Prophet ﷺ sought refuge in Allah from worry and grief.
Narrated Anas bin Malik:The Prophet (ﷺ) used to say, "O Allah! I seek refuge with You from worry and grief, from incapacity and laziness, from cowardice and miserliness, from being heavily in debt and from being overpowered by (other) men." (See Hadith No)
Discomfort, illness, grief and even mental worry expiate a believer's sins.
Abu Sa'id and abu Huraira reported that they heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:Never a believer is stricken with discomfort, hardship or illness, grief or even with mental worry that his sins are not expiated for him
No fatigue, disease, sorrow, sadness, hurt or distress befalls a Muslim without expiating some of his sins.
Narrated Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri and Abu Huraira:The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "No fatigue, nor disease, nor sorrow, nor sadness, nor hurt, nor distress befalls a Muslim, even if it were the prick he receives from a thorn, but that Allah expiates some of his sins for that
The Prophet ﷺ wept as his son was dying, saying the eyes weep and the heart grieves, but we say only what pleases our Lord.
Narrated Anas bin Malik:We went with Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) to the blacksmith Abu Saif, and he was the husband of the wet-nurse of Ibrahim (the son of the Prophet). Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) took Ibrahim and kissed him and smelled him and later we entered Abu Saif's house and at that time Ibrahim was in his last breaths, and the eyes of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) started shedding tears. `Abdur Rahman bin `Auf said, "O Allah's Apostle, even you are weeping!" He said, "O Ibn `Auf, this is mercy." Then he wept more and said, "The eyes are shedding tears and the heart is grieved, and we will not say except what pleases our Lord, O Ibrahim ! Indeed we are grieved by your separation
After the first revelation the Prophet ﷺ returned frightened, and Khadijah comforted and reassured him.
Narrated 'Aisha (the mother of the faithful believers):The commencement of the Divine Inspiration to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) was in the form of good dreams which came true like bright daylight, and then the love of seclusion was bestowed upon him. He used to go in seclusion in the cave of Hira where he used to worship (Allah alone) continuously for many days before his desire to see his family. He used to take with him the journey food for the stay and then come back to (his wife) Khadija to take his food likewise again till suddenly the Truth descended upon him while he was in the cave of Hira. The angel came to him and asked him to read. The Prophet (ﷺ) replied, "I do not know how to read." The Prophet (ﷺ) added, "The angel caught me (forcefully) and pressed me so hard that I could not bear it any more. He then released me and again asked me to read and I replied, 'I do not know how to read.' Thereupon he caught me again and pressed me a second time till I could not bear it any more. He then released me and again asked me to read but again I replied, 'I do not know how to read (or what shall I read)?' Thereupon he caught me for the third time and pressed me, and then released me and said, 'Read in the name of your Lord, who has created (all that exists), created man from a clot. Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous." (96.1, 96.2, 96.3) Then Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) returned with the Inspiration and with his heart beating severely. Then he went to Khadija bint Khuwailid and said, "Cover me! Cover me!" They covered him till his fear was over and after that he told her everything that had happened and said, "I fear that something may happen to me." Khadija replied, "Never! By Allah, Allah will never disgrace you. You keep good relations with your kith and kin, help the poor and the destitute, serve your guests generously and assist the deserving calamity-afflicted ones." Khadija then accompanied him to her cousin Waraqa bin Naufal bin Asad bin 'Abdul 'Uzza, who, during the pre-Islamic Period became a Christian and used to write the writing with Hebrew letters. He would write from the Gospel in Hebrew as much as Allah wished him to write. He was an old man and had lost his eyesight. Khadija said to Waraqa, "Listen to the story of your nephew, O my cousin!" Waraqa asked, "O my nephew! What have you seen?" Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) described whatever he had seen. Waraqa said, "This is the same one who keeps the secrets (angel Gabriel) whom Allah had sent to Moses. I wish I were young and could live up to the time when your people would turn you out." Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) asked, "Will they drive me out?"
