What are the rights of a husband and a wife in Islam?

The short answer

Both spouses have rights over each other "according to what is reasonable". The husband must provide for his wife, treat her kindly and never harm her; the wife is asked to be loyal, guard the home and his trust, and cooperate with him. The Prophet ﷺ said the best of people are those who are best to their wives.

Explanation

The Quran sets the balance in one sentence: "due to the wives is similar to what is expected of them, according to what is reasonable", while men have "a degree" of responsibility 1. Rights run both ways.

The husband is described as qawwam, the one "in charge" and responsible, because of what he spends from his wealth 2. That responsibility is a duty, not a privilege: the Prophet ﷺ said a wife's right is that "you should give her food when you eat, clothe her when you clothe yourself, do not strike her on the face, do not revile her" 3. Men are commanded, "live with them in kindness. For if you dislike them - perhaps you dislike a thing and Allah makes therein much good" 4.

The wife's side is also described: righteous wives are devoted and guard, in their husband's absence, what Allah would have them guard 2. In his Farewell Sermon, the Prophet ﷺ said the husband's right is that his wife does not let anyone he dislikes into his home, and her right is that he treats her well in food and clothing 5.

The same verse, 4:34, mentions steps for a marriage in serious trouble: advice, then separating in bed, then "strike them" 2. The Prophet ﷺ restricted this in the same sermon to a beating "that is not harmful" 5, and he himself "never beat anyone with his hand, neither a woman nor a servant" 6. The texts therefore rule out any striking that injures, and forbid striking the face at all 3 5.

The Prophet ﷺ is the model: "The best of you is the best to his wives, and I am the best of you to my wives" 7. At home he kept himself "busy serving his family" 8.

A marriage built on these rights, and on going beyond them with generosity and kindness 4, is the goal. If a spouse is being harmed, their safety comes first, and they should seek help from a qualified scholar and, where needed, the authorities.

Wives have rights similar to their obligations, according to what is reasonable; men have a degree.

Divorced women remain in waiting for three periods, and it is not lawful for them to conceal what Allah has created in their wombs if they believe in Allah and the Last Day. And their husbands have more right to take them back in this [period] if they want reconciliation. And due to the wives is similar to what is expected of them, according to what is reasonable. But the men have a degree over them [in responsibility and authority]. And Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise

Men are responsible for women because of what they spend; the verse sets steps for serious marital discord.

Men are in charge of women by [right of] what Allah has given one over the other and what they spend [for maintenance] from their wealth. So righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in [the husband's] absence what Allah would have them guard. But those [wives] from whom you fear arrogance - [first] advise them; [then if they persist], forsake them in bed; and [finally], strike them. But if they obey you [once more], seek no means against them. Indeed, Allah is ever Exalted and Grand

A wife's right is food, clothing, not being struck on the face and not being reviled.

Narrated Mu'awiyah al-Qushayri: Mu'awiyah asked: Messenger of Allah, what is the right of the wife of one of us over him? He replied: That you should give her food when you eat, clothe her when you clothe yourself, do not strike her on the face, do not revile her or separate yourself from her except in the house. Abu Dawud said: The meaning of "do not revile her" is, as you say: "May Allah revile you

Sulaiman bin Amr bin Al-Ahwas said:“My father narrated to me that he witnessed the farewell Hajj with the Messenger of Allah. So he thanked and praised Allah and he reminded and gave admonition. He mentioned a story in his narration and he (the Prophet) said: “And indeed I order you to be good to the women, for they are but captives with you over whom you have no power than that, except if they come with manifest Fahishah (evil behavior). If they do that, then abandon their beds and beat them with a beating that is not harmful. And if they obey you then you have no cause against them. Indeed you have rights over your women, and your women have rights over you. As for your rights over your women, then they must not allow anyone whom you dislike to treat on your bedding (furniture), nor to admit anyone in your home that you dislike. And their rights over you are that you treat them well in clothing them and feeding them.”
